Shonny ends Renata's reign; Gardner wins XTERRA Saipan has a new women's champion in U.S. pro Shonny Vanlandingham, while United Kingdom's Sam Gardner kept his reign in the men's category.

Slowed down by food poisoning, Gardner still finished ahead of 46 XTERRA Championship course finishers, clocking in at two hours, 53 minutes, and 46 seconds in Saturday's race. His time in the 2011 XTERRA Saipan was about 20 minutes behind his record and 2010 time of 2:34:03.

Japanese Yuko Hagiwara and several other participants in the 2011 XTERRA Saipan sustained bruises and cuts due to crashes during Saturday's race, but soldiered on, as they knew these pains are just temporary.

XTERRA Saipan participants hoped they could wish the same for Japan, admitting that it will be hard for the Japanese to recover soon from the tragic catastrophe.

Sam Gardner and Shonny Vanlandingham won the XTERRA Saipan Championship on a crazy, post-tsunami morning in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on Saturday.

The two also won the XTERRA Philippines Championship last Sunday. The victory is Gardner's third straight in Saipan, while it's Shonny V's first in three tries and ends Renata Bucher's six-year win streak in the Marianas.

XTERRA's Crown Jewel in Saipan Kicks Off 2011 America Tour This Saturday in the CNMI 2011 marks the 16th year of XTERRA off-road triathlon racing and the 11th year of the U.S. amateur series known as the XTERRA America Tour. This year there are 70 races in 35 states from coast-to-coast, and it all starts Saturday at the 10th annual XTERRA Saipan Championship in the Northern Mariana Islands.

After the inaugural XTERRA Saipan in 2002, staff and competitors alike quickly declared it the "Crown Jewel".  It's epic in so many ways, from the run that goes through the tropical rainforest, past World War II relics and into secret caves to the greatest host hotel ever at the Pacific Islands Club that has its own wave pool and lazy river.

All is set for tomorrow's 2011 XTERRA Saipan Championship with the annual off-road triathlon drawing 104 participants.

Off the more than 100 individuals, 56 will compete in the solo race and eight in the team event in the XTERRA Championship. In the shorter course-XTERRA Sport-16 will do the individual race and five will battle in the team division.
